The Knitted
Jumper
Title: knitted jumper.
Maker: my great-aunt Lia.
Materials: pure wool.
Provenance: probably my somewhere in my mum’s old family home.
Mode of acquisition: generational handover.
Time owned: a long time – maybe from my high school early years.
Evocativeness: the smell of mothballs in my great-aunt wardrobe, the mountain mornings when I dressed up for skiing. Originally made for my mum when she was young, I don’t remember the exact moment I inherited it, but I’ve always kept it well protected in my wardrobe as if it was some sort of talisman. I then started to wear it more frequently (it has followed me to London) and it feels just special taking it out in the coldest days.
Anecdote: as it’s hand-knitted, there’s no label, so I’m never too sure of what’s the front and what’s the back! But over the years I found my points of reference and this makes it even more unique compared to all my other garments.
